Group counseling is treatment provided to a group of clients at the same time rather than one-on-one. Groups usually have 6-12 members, though they may be smaller or larger in some situations. Each group usually has a common issue that is the focus of the group, such as depression, quitting smoking, or trauma. Group sessions are typically 1.5-2 hours long and usually meet once a week. Group counseling can be more affordable than individual counseling since the counselor can meet with several clients at the same time.
There are advantages to group counseling besides the lower cost, such as:
- Group members can listen to others who are going through the same thing and provide support and encouragement for each other.
- Seeing someone who has been through similar experiences can provide a role model for other group members and instill hope that they can get through their difficulties. They, in turn, have an opportunity to be role models as they progress.
- Through the course of the sessions, group members begin to feel safe with each other which gives them an opportunity to try out new behaviors in the safety of the group.
- The group leader has a chance to see first-hand how group members interact with others socially which provides an opportunity for valuable feedback from the leader and other members.
